Printing, the official export, copy-paste, or CHATGPT.Vellum - here is what actually happens with each one, so you can pick the right method for your conversation.
| Method | CHATGPT.Vellum | Long chats | Images | Formatting | One click |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CHATGPT.Vellum | This one | Never cut off | Kept inline | Preserved | Yes |
| Browser print (Ctrl+P) | vs | Often cuts off | Sometimes missing | Squeezed to fit the screen | Yes |
| Official data export | vs | Full, but raw | Referenced, not embedded | Raw JSON, not a document | No - email and wait |
| Copy and paste | vs | Realistic for short replies only | Lost | Tables and code break | No - manual |
The page loads messages lazily, so a long conversation often stops partway down when you print. What has not loaded yet does not make it onto the page.
Settings → Data controls → Export sends a conversations.json archive to your email. Complete, but it is raw data, not a document you can read or share.
Fine for a short answer. Past a few messages, tables and code lose their formatting, and pasting a long thread by hand is not realistic.
Lays the whole conversation out first, then saves it as one clean PDF: images inline, code blocks intact, no size limit.
Add it to Chrome and reopen the chat.
The extension lays out the whole conversation, images and code included.
The browser print dialog opens with everything ready.
Install CHATGPT.Vellum and press Save to PDF. Of the four methods above, it is the only one that keeps images and code formatting without any manual cleanup.
Yes, with Ctrl+P, but long conversations often get cut off partway because the page has not finished loading every message. See why that happens and the fix.
Not directly. The official export gives you a conversations.json file by email, which is raw data rather than a formatted PDF.
Press Save to PDF in CHATGPT.Vellum and the file lands straight in your downloads folder. More on that here.
CHATGPT.Vellum is free on the Chrome Web Store. Built in your browser.
